WITH this year’s Dakar Rallye now underway an exciting new chapter in the event’s history has begun. Cancelled in 2008 due to the very real threat of terrorism in North Africa, after a 24-month absence the world’s biggest rally is back and is now running in South America. THE 2008 MMX British Under 21 Championship was the closest for many years with no fewer than five different moto winners from the 12-race series. But, in the end, when all the points where tallied up, Alex Snow was the winner just twenty points ahead of Kristian Whatley and the destiny of the crown was decided at the very last race of the series.

LIVING motorcycle legend Sammy Miller has been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. Sam’s award, cheered by motorcyclists everywhere, is in recognition of his services to motorcycle heritage. Founder of the Sammy Miller Foundation Trust Motorcycle Museum, Sammy has worked tirelessly, restoring over 400 rare and classic motorcycles.

THE 2008 Maxxis British MX2 Motocross Championship turned into a two-man battle of attrition as Scotsmen Stephen Sword and Shaun Simpson scrapped it out over the whole eight rounds of the series. In fact, the pair proved to be so dominant that only two other riders would take moto victories – wildcard Tommy Searle at round one and UTAG Yamaha’s American boy Zach Osborne…

DAVID Campbell utilised past experience gained in both Grand Prix and ACU British championship rounds to maximum advantage, and proved he still has a lot to offer by claiming the 2008 AMCA MX1 title. In another thrilling, roller-coaster of an MX1 championship season, once again the title went right down to the wire and a last round decider. Remarkably just like 2007, Ben Saunders was to be the unfortunate loser on this occasion suffering a heartbreaking triple DNF due to mechanical gremlins.

ONE thing is certain, the boys who won the five championships in the ACU 2008 Youth National trials series were worthy winners. Make no mistake, all the classes, apart from Richard Sadler’s Class B title, were fought right down to the wire. The British weather pattern this year has put pressure on all the organisers, from the extreme icy conditions in February to the torrential rain in October.

IN the end it was all too easy for KTM to get the World MX2 title back on the shelf for the first time in four years, but for more than half the season it was knock-about all the way with the orange duo of Tyla Rattray and Tommy Searle banging bars with Toni Cairoli for the race wins.

VIC Scriven, organiser of many South Eastern and Southern Centre events, has died at the age of 82. Vic started his passion for motocross when he took his wife, Joan, to the Motocross des Nations at Norg, Holland, on a 500cc Matchless back in the 1950s.

THE West of England club is the busiest organisation in the South West Centre, and they rounded off a busy 2008 with its Pre-Christmas Cup Trial on the outskirts of Widecombe-in-the-Moor on Sunday which was won by Exmoor Clubman Nick Baker.

FOR the 67th staging of the Southern Experts Trial, annual organisers Sunbeam MCC Ltd joined forces with Stroud Valley MC. The venue selected for the 2008 event was Nympsfield on land, which in years gone by had been better known for staging the National Cotswold Scramble. But with the scramblers now long gone though, on Sunday it was brought back to life as legendary trials champion, Steve Saunders, plotted a testing 15-sections which the 60-plus entry had to tackle three times in their allotted five-hour time limit.

PAUL ‘Fast Eddy’ Edmondson was aptly named as he made the trip to Lochhouses, near Edinburgh, recently, for the final round of the Metzeler Melville MC three-hour X-Country Championship. Total domination by Edmondson was the order of the day in the Expert class for former multi-world Enduro champion from the start – bang on 12pm.

BASSENTHWAITE and District Motor Club ran its Stanley Tallontire Memorial Trial on Sunday December 7 at Haltcliffe, Mungrisdale. Although temperatures had risen slightly, much of the venue was still in the grip of the recent cold spell with ice and snow, particularly on the ride over the top of the fell where the snow was still very deep and a bitterly cold wind kept temperatures down.

Scotland celebrates as MacKenzie and Simpson lift MX1 and MX2 titles... Not since Vic Allan (MBE) won BOTH the 500cc AND the 250cc British Motocross Championships in 1974 has there been anything like the Scottish domination of the main British domestic motocross championship as there was in 2008.
